If you know someone who loved the movie or the stage musical of Les Miserables, then this 10th anniversary DVD will be a lovely souvenir and the perfect gift.
I first watched this many years ago whilst living abroad and absolutely loved it! It was recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. The story of forgiveness and mercy in the face of cruelty and deprivation was set in the time of the French revolution and based upon Victor Hugo's book.
A Star Cast
The star cast sang in such a powerfully moving way that it gave me goosebumps and moved me to tears. I couldn't help but feel anger at those who had mistreated those for whom I felt pity. Although the optional sub-titles helped us along with historical facts, it wasn't just a historical account but a captivating story of human resilience and love. The stage setting provided a strong platform for the outstanding performances of casting such as Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Michael Ball, Lea Salonga and Ruthie Henshall who appeared convincing in their costumes. Their singing was swelled at times by a 200 strong choir and accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. You could feel the tension in the audience whose applause reiterated your feeling that this was an amazing performance.
The Climax
At the end the cast are joined on stage by 17 other Valjeans singing in their own languages from countries where Les Miserables has been played to audiences around the world. This provides such a great climax in celebration of this brilliant work from Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schnberg.
I have to admit that having seen the recent cinema movie version I was left feeling disappointed, but I guess that I had been spoilt by already having seen this rich version of the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary DVD. The truth was that this version didn't need anything else. I would recommend buying your own copy, because you will no doubt like me, want to watch it many times.
