Celebrate Fat Tuesday With Pancakes

This special day is celebrated the day before Lent begins, which is of course a more serious christian occasion in the calendar and a great opportunity to look reflectively at your life in humility and repentance, leading up to Easter. Fat Tuesday was so named because it was the day to indulge in fat, butter and eggs that were not allowed to be eaten during Lent. These ingredients would be used in making pancakes and so in England it became known as Pancake Day. In America however, it takes it's name from the French words Mardi Gras, which mean Fat Tuesday. Their biggest festivals tend to take place in New Orleans. In Bavaria, Germany, it is called Fasching and is celebrated with much fun and festivities, by parading in costumes and eating Krapfen (donuts) before the more serious time arrives with Lent. Wherever you come from it's an opportunity to find meaning in life and enjoy the company of friends and family. I well remember rushing home from school on pancake day and helping my mother make homemade pancakes for my hungry sisters and I. We loved them with lemon and sugar or golden syrup. Read on for a FREE recipe and resources to make your celebrations a great success and find out who the pancake tossers are by voting below!

How To Toss A Pancake

Loosen the pancake around the edge of your pan with a spatula, hold the pan handle in both hands, give it a good shake and then jerk it towards you so that the pancake turns over. Be prepared to move the pan to catch it in flight! Don't toss it too high!

Shrove Tuesday

Pancake Day in England is also known as Shrove Tuesday. The word "shrove" came from the word "shrive" which means to confess. It originates from the Middle Ages when people used to confess their sins before the season of Lent began. It was a day of celebration as well as penitence, as people would indulge themselves on food that wasn't allowed during Lent, such as the fat, butter and eggs found in pancakes.
